FAQ

1. Logistics and Services for School Trips
Q: How many UnknownChina Staff will accompany each school group?
A: For every group of a size between 10 and 35 students we usually have one local guide during all activities and one tour leader who stays with the group 24 hours. Larger groups get divided in smaller sub-groups which have their own guide and tour-leader.

Q: What kind of hotels do we use?
A: In larger cities we recommend 4 star facilities with international service standards. For tours in the countryside we also use smaller guesthouses and sometimes stay with local families.

Q: Can you book flights for us as well?
A£ºWe can book the domestic flights in China but not the international flights. Normally you will get better discounts when you book in your own country.

Q: What type of restaurants do you choose?
A: As part of policy of supporting locals, we prefer to choose local cuisine in a pleasant atmosphere, avoiding restaurants frequented by large tour groups. We spend a lot of time researching the best restaurants at each location to offer you a diverse dining experience.

Q: How do you manage a big size group?
A: If there are more than 35 students, we split them into 2 or more sub-groups, which all have the same program, stay in the same hotel, but follow a different itinerary.

Q: Do both tour leader and -guide speak English?
A: All tour leaders and guides are bilingual, fluent in both Mandarin and English.

Q: Do we need to give tips to guides and drivers?
A: Tips are included in all our school tours; you do not need to worry about that. We have our own system of rewarding our staff for outstanding performances.

2. Health and Safety Policy
Q: Is it safe to travel in China?
A: Your safety is important to us, so we encourage you to stay alert and be aware of your surroundings. Keep an eye on cameras, wallets and other favorite targets of pickpockets. We strongly recommend that you put your belongings in two separate purses: one with credit cards and your passport, the other one with cash and small changes.
China has relatively low crime rate when compared to most other countries, you will be received courteously through the length and breadth of your journey.

Q: Do you offer travel insurance?
A: All our trips include travel insurance from AIU Insurance Company, which is a member of American Insurance Group and supported by AIAS (American International Assistant Service).  For further information please see here.

In case you're looking for a higher coverage and/or additional benefits such as cancellation, trip interruption, and baggage insurance, we recommend you to purchase other optional insurance from a reputable international insurance company based in your home country.

Q: Do the tour leaders know First Aid procedures?
A: All our tour leaders have completed First Aid Training. Additionally, we update our contingency plan and hold First Aid refreshment meetings every six months.

Q: How to find the nearest hospital on the trip?
A: For all our destinations we have a data base of reliable hospitals. We will include the details of these hospitals in your pre- departure information.
Since all our groups are accompanied by at least two UnknownChina staff, one will stay with the group while the other takes care of the transportation and stays with the patient.

Q: What are the road conditions like in China?
A: Even though China's infrastructure has improved a lot in recent years, some of the roads - especially in the western part of the country can still be quite bumpy, or have road works causing traffic delays.

Q: What kind of buses do you use?
A: We use modern tour buses with A/C, TV (VCD).
Please note: in China, buses with more than 10 seats do not provide safety belts for all seats.

3. Booking
Q: How far in advance do we have to book?
A: The latest is usually one month before the trip starts. Some of the programs such as Community Service or Field Studies are better booked further ahead, because of the necessary preparations. The number of tours we can conduct at the same time is also limited, so please book early for the months April, May, September, and October as these periods are usually booked out well in advance.

Q: What if we need to cancel the trip, can we get a refund?
A: In case of cancellation:
15 days or more prior to trip departure:  70% of the total cost will be refunded
14 days or less prior to trip - no refund

Under extraordinary circumstances caused by unforeseeable force majeure, civil unrest, terrorism, either party may cancel the trip without compensation.  Notification of any such circumstances should be served immediately with proof.  Fund collected should be refunded, after deduction of incurred expenses.
