Tiger and Weather

January 2007, UnknownChina staff Nina went on a one- week volunteer trip in Northeastern China's Hunchun Nature Reserve. Together with 73 other volunteers, this Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) program made quite a media splash on Amur Tiger's endangered situation in China.

Instead of being on top of the food chain the Amur Tiger and the Far East Leopard  are now some local people's main income in winter. Something must to be done to help local community and economy.

Nina was also disappointed that this normally frozen zone at the Russian- Korean- Chinese border was not that cold at all. Was it because of the global warming? Three weeks after Nina left Jilin Province, the Winter Asian Games were held here-- without any natural snow.

For Nina, this probably was one of the most interesting winters in her life: tracking down the illegal poaching traps in the birch forest and meeting with people who share the same commitment of protecting wildlife and environment. For many of us, this winter has brought the inconvenient truth of global warming to the forefront-- now, with environmental issues finally being a serious item on the agenda, we hope that eco- friendly concerns are hitting the mainstream in China.
